About this piece
Leonid Afremov (1955–2019), a Belarusian-Israeli painter.
This is his best-known kind of picture:
Technique: thick paint applied with a palette knife instead of a brush (impasto), so the paint stands up in raised, sculpted dabs. That's what gives the leaves their mosaic look.
Subject: a rainy evening in a city park or boulevard, with glowing street lamps, figures under umbrellas and wet pavement.
Colour: vivid oranges, yellows and reds set against deep blues and turquoise, so the lamplight seems to glow.
Reflections: the wet ground mirrors the lights in long vertical streaks, one of his signature effects.
