Bronze and stone in motion

Sigrid Halvorsen carved her first stone at nineteen on the coast near Bergen, and has been chasing movement in heavy materials ever since. After a long career teaching sculpture in Oslo, she moved to the hills above Loulé.

Her work has grown more abstract with the years. Today she makes single ribbons of bronze or stone that twist and turn as they rise, catching the light differently from every side. She calls them dancers, though none of them has a face, and most of them have never heard music.
